Vasectomy Reversal With Dr. Monteith

I perform single mini-incision vasectomy reversal. Patients who come to me for vasectomy reversal can do so with the knowledge they are coming to a fertility surgeon who has the skill and passion to make their vasectomy reversal and fertility goals a reality.

I began my training in sterilization reversal with Dr. Gary Berger of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. After a weeklong microsurgical training course at the Cleveland Clinic, I trained closely with Dr. Berger for six months and then began my career as a full-time fertility surgeon and exclusively specialized in microsurgical female sterilization reversal. Since then I have performed over 1500 female sterilization reversals and was the first doctor in the world to publish case reports of successful pregnancy after surgical correction and reversal of the newer methods of hysteroscopic female sterilization, Essure and Adiana.

Why I Started Offering Vasectomy Reversal

Overtime I was continually contacted by my female patients who had successful female sterilization reversal and who wanted to refer their friends to me for vasectomy reversal.
They would tell me they wanted to recommend their friends to a doctor they could trust.
They wanted their friends to have an experience as good as theirs. Initially I was dismissive and referred these patients to other reversal providers. After receiving these request for several years, I had two events happen to me almost simultaneously.

While on a mission trip to the Philippines there was an opportunity to perform a vasectomy reversal on an American who was living there. The discussion centered on the observation vasectomy reversal makes vasectomy an acceptable form of birth control for some men because there was always the possibility it could be undone if it was absolutely required. Some members of the group expressed the fact they offered vasectomy reversal for this very reason. When I returned my office staff informed me one of my previous vasectomy patients had come to the office inquiring about the possibility of having their vasectomy reversed. After years of patients wanting me to offer vasectomy reversal and after my first patient requested reversal of a vasectomy I performed, I then determined it was important to provide vasectomy reversal.

I performed a mentorship with Dr. Doug Stein, a vasectomy and vasectomy reversal provider, in Tampa, Florida. After I moved my practice to Raleigh, I was then able to fully integrate vasectomy reversal as an offered service.

Single Mini-incision Vasectomy Reversal

I perform vasectomy reversal in my surgical center, under general anesthesia, and through a single, small incision in the center of the scrotum. Most patients can schedule surgery over the phone, have a pre-operative appointment with me the first day and their surgery the second day. The procedure is done under magnification using fine 9-0 sutures and takes 1.5 to 3 hours to complete. Patients have their follow-up visit the day after their surgery and are then free to return home. Patients can return to work in 3 to 5 days and resume sexual activity after 2 weeks.

Vasectomy reversal can be successful in up to 90% of cases and the time since the vasectomy is the most important predictor of the success of vasectomy reversal.

I would like all potential patients considering vasectomy reversal with me to be aware of the following:

I am board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Obstetricians and Gynecologists are physicians who, by virtue of satisfactory completion of an accredited program of graduate medical education, possess special knowledge, skills and professional capability in the medical and surgical care of women related to pregnancy and disorders of the female reproductive system. I am not a urologist.

I completed a formal one week microsurgical training course at the Cleveland Clinic. I have been performing female sterilization reversal since 2008.

I sought additional training in vasectomy and vasectomy reversal through one-on-one professional mentorships. I have performed minimally invasive vasectomy since 2007 and I began offering minimally invasive vasectomy reversal in 2014.

I perform minimally invasive vasectomy reversal in my in-office operating room under general anesthesia. I only perform vasovasostomy (end to end connections) vasectomy reversal and do not perform vasoepididymostomy (vas deferens to epididymis) by-pass procedures. The majority of reversals can be successfully performed as vasovasostomy procedures.

It is difficult to predict preoperatively who will require a vasoepididymostomy procedure. Men who have had vasectomy greater than 10 years are more at risk for requiring vasoepididymostomy and should consider having reversal with a Urologist who is fellowship trained in performing vasoepididymostomy procedures.

I offers office consultations for patients who are considering vasectomy reversal at His Choice to discuss concerns about vasectomy reversal.

"Excellent care. I visited Dr. Monteith for a single visit appointment on a Friday. Very clean, comfortable office. Pleasant staff. The procedure was quick and I went back to work for a little while. The only pain I experienced was soreness beginning about 4 hours post procedure, lasting for 24 hours, then subsiding rapidly. I was fine by Monday. The office checked on me twice, no problems. I would recommend Dr. Monteith to anyone.
